Farnaz Arasteh’s Husband
John Phillips’ life was full of drama, from drug abuse to multiple affairs and an incestuous relationship with his daughter. John married his first wife, Susan Adams, in 1957, with whom he had two children: Mackenzie and Jeffrey Phillips. By then, he was a member of Journeymen, and while the band was on tour, he met Holly “Michelle” Gillian.
The two soon began a romantic relationship, and soon after, Phillips divorced Susan to marry Michelle in 1962. The two had a child named Chynna Phillips. Around this time, Phillips gathered musicians to create the eventual The Mamas and The Papas group, which included Michelle, Denny Doherty, and Cass Elliot.
Michelle had an affair with fellow band member Denny, leading to their separation. She then started a romantic relationship with Gene Clark of the Byrds and got fired from the group. She was eventually allowed back into the band, but she divorced Phillips in 1970.
Phillips later Met and married South African model Genevieve Waite in 1972. They had two children: Tamerlane and Bijou Phillips. They divorced in 1985. A decade later, Phillips met and married artist Fanaz Arasteh, his wife, until he died.
Phillips’ first daughter, Mackenzie, wrote a book in 2009 that described a dark secret about her father. Phillips assaulted her when she was 19, the night before her wedding. The two were on drugs, and she had passed out, only to wake up to find herself having sex with her father. Their incestuous relationship continued despite their marriage, and Phillips, at some point, wanted them to elope to another country. The relationship ended when Mackenzie became pregnant and was not sure who the father of the child was. Phillips persuaded her to have an abortion, and that’s when she decided never to let him touch her again. Some of her family denied the allegations, while others thought it was true.
Phillips was a drug trafficker, and he used drugs as well. Years of drug addiction led to health problems, and he had a liver transplant in 1992. He continued drinking despite the transplant. He spent his last years with his Fanaz Arasteh in Palm Springs, California. Phillips died of heart failure in Los Angeles on 13 March 2001.
