About Air Gear
Air Gear was originally released as a Japanese manga series. It debuted back in 2003 with 37 volumes. That’s quite a good number to follow.

The story is about a middle school teenage boy named Itsuki Minami. He is also known as “Ikki”. This boy is quite known for being involved in street fights. This reckless punk breaks through any obstacles that come his way alongside his best friends Kazuma Mikura and Onigiri.
One day, Ikki discovers a pair of Air Trecks in his house. It opened his true desire for skating. Air Trecks (AT) are motorized and futuristic inline skates. These pairs are a new craze that has speed limits.
Since every story has an antagonist, it is the “Storm Riders” for this anime series. They are the unhappy daredevil brats that are brave enough to destroy Air Trecks.
Renewal Delays
Air Gear has intrigued millions of viewers. If you’re a sports and an anime lover at the same time, this is a must-watch movie. Hence, the fans are on standby for a sequel for more than 15 years.
But what is stopping it from renewing? The main reason could be the film’s inability to earn big despite its unique theme. They weren’t able to earn as much.
Air Gear has impressed many viewers but some gave average reviews. The series deteriorated due to its painful storyline.
Although they produced the first season with good animation and soundtrack, those still don’t compensate for everything. Hence, they struggled to earn a good revenue leading to discontinuation of renewal.

This is an adaptation of its manga series so it will be dependent on the source material available. So far, the manga contains 37 volumes. It’s a good number of sources to start with.
The first season adapted the first 12 volumes of its source material. The two OVAs (Original Video Animation) consumed the plot of volumes 16, 23, and 24.
Hence, there are still about 22 volumes of manga unadapted to anime episodes. Now that is a good source for the next season!
Release Date
By the time that Toei Animation gets interested in renewing the sequel, the new season might arrive early. The release date might fall sometime in 2022 or a little later.
They should make an official statement and let the fans know soonest to hype everything up! Surely, they will reserve their energy for the coming of Air Gear Season 2.

To answer the question if it’s canceled or not, it is not. There is no official statement yet. The fans are still hoping for the Air Gear Season 2 to be renewed, may it be by Toei Animation or not.
