Drake Early Life

Aubrey Drake Graham was born in Toronto, Canada on 24th October 1986. His father named Dennis used to work as a drummer who worked with Jerry Lee Lewis throughout his career. His mother Sandra was an English teacher and a florist. Drake went to a Jewish day school. When he was five, his parents were divorced. His father shifted to Memphis and was arrested and imprisoned on drug charges. Aubrey spent his childhood with his mother though he would visit his father when he came out of jail. Drake frequently says that Dennis remained absent during his childhood but Dennis denies these claims, saying that they are embellished to raise the sale of his records.

From sixth grade onwards, Drake shifted with his mother to the bottom half of a double story home in Forest Hill. His mother lived on the ground floor while Drake lived in the basement. This was a tough time as both were struggling with money.

Drake went to Forest Hill Collegiate Institute and found his love for singing and acting. Later on, he attended Vaughan Road Academy, a place where he had been bullied for his religious and bi-racial background. He even dropped out for some time but eventually graduated in 2012.

Career Highlights

At the age of 15, an acting agent, who was a childhood friend’s father, helped Drake get a role in the teen drama series Degrassi: The Next Generation. He played the role of Jimmy Brooks in the show. During that period, his mother got ill and he couldn’t work anymore. His paychecks were the only income source to run their household. At that time, he was earning around $50,000 per year from Degrassi. That was around $2,000 a month after taxes. The situation got worse for both with her illness.

Drake says that he was greatly inspired by rap icons such as Jaz-Z who had earned record deals after proving his mettle as an independent artist. Aubrey chose his middle name ‘Drake’ as his stage name and released some mixtapes at the start of his career in 2005. His first mixtape was ‘Room for Improvement’ which he released on his MySpace page and his website. He directly sold around 6,000 copies of the tape.

Lavish Lifestyle

Though Drake was born in Canada, he has been calling Hidden Hills, California his home since the day he bought the mansion in 2012 for $7.7 million. The mansion has since been nicknamed as the YOLO Estate. The vast property features a main house that spreads over 12,000 square-foot and a party house that is built over 2,000 square-foot. There are stables, a movie theatre, a basketball court, a sand volleyball court, and private pools in the mansion. A lagoon-like pool that loops about the outside of the house features waterfalls, a water slide, a swim-up bar, and a grotto. Drake says that he had his eye on the mansion for years. The property was originally listed for $27 million in 2009 but in 2012 the owner was caught up in a cash crunch and he lowered the rate, so Drake grabbed the opportunity and bought it for $7.7 million. In 2015, he expanded the property by buying up a 1.6-acre neighboring property for $2.8 million. In 2018, he made another expansion by buying up a $4.5 million neighboring property.
