Early Life
Algernod Lanier Washington or best known for his rap name “Plies” was born on July 1, 1976, in Fort Myers, Florida, United States and grew up in the East Dunbar area. He took his high school education at Fort Myers Senior High School where he was active in sports, playing as a receiver and a defensive back on the school football team. Plies excelled in his academics, he was crowned as Homecoming King, named “Best Dressed” student and the valedictorian of his class.
In his college life in 1995 to 1997, he attended Miami University and was known by the name Nod Washington, he also played in the University’s football team as a wide receiver. He was a good football player. In his first year in 1995, he had nine receptions for 69 yards. In his second year in 1996, he had 2 touchdowns and 25 receptions in 262 yards. The following season, he had 5 receptions in 43 yards. He then transferred to the University of Central Florida, where he dropped out as a student.

In 2006, he and his members were charged with attempted murder after a shooting at a nightclub in Gainesville, Florida. There were 5 civilians injured during the shootout. A statement from his promoter has said that Plies was irritated after his music was cut off when the performance had run overtime. It was a fistfight that turned into shooting with at least six rounds being fired.
During a concert in Tallahassee, Florida, in 2015, Plies was involved in what has been recorded as a viral video of a fan attacking a stage artist. Later that year, Plies made a song out of his experience being attacked on stage, the song title was “Dayum!”.
Early Career
Plies music career started in the late 90s where he and his stepbrother Ronnell Lavatte or well known as Big Gates, started their own independent label record called Big Gates Records. During this time, Plies has no intention of becoming a rap artist, although he has already made several track demos. Big Gate decided to keep his song track, Tell Dem Krackers Dat. Both promoted the single song and constantly traveled to Miami where Plies was able to land a record deal with Slip-n-Slide Records. It was in 2004 that Plies signed with Slip-n-Slide and from then on has released several mixtapes.
In 2007, was the release of his album, The New Testament which brought in his debut song “Shawty” featuring T-Pain. The song became popular and landed on the top of the Billboard Hot Rap Tracks chart and also became the number nine on the Hot 100.

His best debut song was his second single “Hypnotized”, featuring Akon. The song peaked number three in the industry charts and fourteen on the Hot 100.
