Your Comprehensive Step-By-Step Guide To Cleaning Your Dirt Bike Helmet

Helmets protect your head from severe injuries from falls or accidents. They shield your face from all the mud and dirt flying your way from every direction. Hence, your helmet deserves extra care and attention from you.

Fortunately, taking care of a dirt bike helmet does not require much effort. You just need to clean it to keep it going for years and years. Here is how to clean a dirt bike helmet.

Step-By-Step Guide To Cleaning Your Dirt Bike Helmet

Step #1: Remove the accessories

The modern dirt bike helmets flaunt several coming-of-age technical appendages, such as Bluetooth communication, action camera, etc. Remove all these accessories from your helmet before cleaning it.

For dual sport or off-road helmets, removing the peak of the helmet is also necessary.

Step #2: Remove the liners

If your helmet is equipped with a removable internal liner, detach it from the helmet before cleaning it. Keep yourself from removing the EPS or crushable liner fixed inside the top of the helmet.

Step #3: Clean the helmet

Now that your helmet minus the accessories and liners is in your hands, prepare it for cleaning. Start by spraying lukewarm water to the outer shell and cleaning it with the help of a mild detergent or hand or face wash. If the helmet is heavily laden in mud post your dirt biking spree, use a microfiber cloth to clean the mud. Soak the cloth into warm water and wrap it around the helmet. Keep cleaning the exterior until it is spotless. Use a soft toothbrush to clean the hard-to-reach spots.

Use the same method to clean the removable peak of your dual sport or off-road helmet.

Step #4: Clean the liners

Just like the exterior of the helmet deals with mud and dirt, the interior lining of your helmet battles with oil and sweat. Hence, it also gets equally dirty.

Warm water and a mild detergent or baby shampoo work well for cleaning the liners or comfort padding.

To clean the liners, fill warm water in a bucket or a tub and mix the detergent. Now, dip the liner in the solution and clean it by rubbing it with your hands. Rinse it with water and refill your bucket. Repeat the same scrubbing and squeezing process. Change the water again. Keep repeating the process until you find no trace of dirt in the water.

Once the liners are clean, squeeze them to remove water and dry them in the shade. Steer clear from drying them in direct sunlight or using a hairdryer.

Step #5: Clean the visor

Keeping the visor clean is essential for your safety while riding your bike. To clean the dirty visor, mix warm water and mild detergent. Soak a microfiber cloth in it and then wrap that cloth on the visor. Clean out dead bugs with the help of this soaked cloth or ear buds.

Be extra careful during this process. Do not harshly scrub the visor, or you will scratch or damage it.

Step #6: Clean the internal sun visor or shield

Many dirt bike helmets feature a separate internal sun shield. Although the internal sun visor doesn’t get very dirty, it traps dust, and hence, cleaning it is essential.

To clean it, sprinkle some water on it and clean it with a microfiber cloth. You do not need to remove it from the helmet to clean it.

Step #7: Clean the vents

You just need to blow air from the inside of your helmet or use earbuds to clean the vents.

Step #8: Reassemble your helmet

Once your helmet is clean and dry, reassemble it, and it is ready for use.

The bottom line

Helmets are the most essential protective gear. Furthermore, they tend to get very dirty on every ride. So, cleaning and maintaining them is crucial for your safety. We hope this guide will help you to keep your helmet clean.
